Are you a fan or follower of Jesus? Most of us would jump at the opportunity to proclaim our Jesus fandom, but the truth is, Jesus isn’t looking for fans; he’s looking for completely committed followers. How can we tell the difference?
The dictionary defines a fan as, “an enthusiastic admirer.” We live in a culture where it seems like everyone wants fans. Most of us just want others to admire and accept us. It’s not that being a fan is a bad thing; it’s just that for Jesus, it’s not enough. We can admire Jesus and still not follow him.
Fans want to be close enough to Jesus to get all the benefits, but not so close that it requires sacrifice. They may be fine with repeating a prayer, attending church on the weekend, and slapping a Jesus fish on their bumpers. But, is that really the extent of the relationship Jesus wants?
The follower of Jesus is almost always aware of what Paul said in Galatians 2:22: “I have been crucified with Christ and it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.” Everything about a follower’s life reflects the fact that they are being led by Jesus. Followers have completely committed themselves to become more like Jesus, both in word and deed.
The Not a Fan Resources were built around the insightful book, Not a Fan, written by Kyle Idleman, the Lead Pastor at Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, KY. Each resource was conscientiously created to challenge you to consider what it really means to call yourself a Christian.
